Migrating OneDrive and Drive

Files, folders, sharing, and Google Docs on the way out.

OneDrive and Google Drive move with the mailbox migration when files are in scope. Files stream through MigrateX in chunks — never written to disk — and sharing is re-granted to the matched people in the target.

What moves

  • Every file and folder in the personal drive, with created and modified dates.
  • Sharing: each person a file is shared with is looked up in the user mapping and re-granted the same role in the target. Sharing links and external people are listed as notes instead — nothing is guessed.
  • Google Docs, Sheets and Slides are exported as Word, Excel and PowerPoint when leaving Google. Office files stay as they are.
  • Google Drive to Google Drive copies inside Google (share → copy → unshare), so it is fast and the file never leaves Google.

A target user without a OneDrive

A Microsoft 365 user who has never opened OneDrive does not have one yet. MigrateX asks Microsoft to create it and waits — the row shows Creating the OneDrive for a few minutes, then the copy starts by itself. The user needs a license that includes OneDrive and must be allowed to sign in; if not, the row says so by name.

What doesn't

  • Version history — the current version moves.
  • OneNote notebooks and other packages — listed by name for manual follow-up.
  • Files changed since they were copied are picked up by the next delta pass; verification also flags them.
Shared with someone who isn't matched? The share is listed as a note. Match the person on the Users tab and run a delta pass; the share is granted then.
