Cutover

The ten steps, DNS, the user notice and the report.

6 min read

Cutover is the evening the domain and mail routing move. Everything is already in the target by then; the wizard walks the ten steps in order and checks DNS before you flip.

Before cutover evening

  • Everyone who is moving has been migrated and verified; staged Teams are current.
  • You have access to the DNS for the domain.
  • You have told people what to expect — the wizard drafts the notice for you.

The ten steps

  1. Forward mail from the old tenantNew mail arriving at the source is forwarded to the target so nothing lands in a mailbox nobody reads.
  2. Final delta passCarries the last hours of mail, files and history. Free, like every delta pass.
  3. VerifyOne last comparison; copy anything missing.
  4. Make staged Teams availableThey leave migration mode and get their members. No more history after this.
  5. Release the domain from the sourceUsers are moved to the fallback domain first so nobody loses an address.
  6. Add and verify the domain in the targetMigrateX shows the TXT record to add; press Check when it is there.
  7. Claim the addressesPrimary addresses and aliases on the moved domain are applied in the target.
  8. Point MX, SPF and Autodiscover at the targetThe wizard shows the records and checks them. It tells you if MX still points at the old tenant.
  9. Send the user noticeA ready-made message: what changed, what to do on their phone and desktop, who to call.
  10. Sign offPrint the report or export the CSV for the change record.

After cutover

  • Keep the source tenant for a while; forwarding catches stragglers.
  • Re-invite guests from the target tenant.
  • Delete the MigrateX app from the source tenant when you are done — or keep it for a final delta.
